One common thread that runs through our sport is the "toughness" factor. I mean, we're all about pain and suffering; we watch the Tour and sit there mesmerized. Glued to the screen watching Contador, Schleck, and the rest of them grind they're way up impossible mountains one pedal stroke at a time; hour after hour. Or the sheer recklessness of the pack sprints with Cavendish,Farrer, and the rest of 'em taking God-awful risks as they blast to the line at 40+ mph.One mis-calculation and they're leaving pounds of flesh on the road. Watching that maniac Renshaw head-butting Julian Dean at 38mph. I think I love the Classics more than the grand tours 'cause each race has a life or death aspect to it. Watching the gaps open up as some poor pro sits there 50 bikes back hammerin' himself to death in a brutal cross wind on the washboard cobbles in northern France trying to close a three meter gap....and just can't do it.

And we've all been there at some level. When the pace is so hard that all that's left of your existence is the wheel in front of you. Some of my favorite races have been the 1/2/3 crits at Marlton (about the only course where I have a shot at finishing a 1/2/3 event) when the cracks at the front are hammerin' at 28 -30 mph and ya just sit on the wheel in front of ya prayin' for it to end. And the immense satisfaction I get when the pace finally settles down and I'm still there.

Or the absolute despair on those occassions when I couldn't do it. That sickening feeling when the gap starts to grow and before ya know it.... you find yourself dropped. My low point of this season was getting dropped in the Cat 3 RR when there were some hard attacks on the hills and I simply couldn't do it. I was miserable for several weeks. Of course the sure cure for a bad race....is simply a good race! And I had a couple where I had a chance to redeem myself and ride a little better. But getting dropped simply sucks.

So we develop a deep respect for the tough guys. We love the fast guys for sure, I mean who doesn't get a rush watching Cavendish charge to the line? Or the strong men; seeing Contador dance up a mountain seemingly effortlessly. Or the sheer power of Cancellera as he rips up the road on his way to another TT win.

But who do we really like. How 'bout Jens Voight? Is there anybody that doesn't love this guy? He epitomizes what we love about this sport.

Which brings me to my point. I have a deep respect for most of the local riders. All of my team mates for sure. Watching Ryan Petitt blast the field on his way to another sprint win...he has brutal power on tap. Or watching Jason sneak away from the field and just hammer away to another win. Shawn Teske leading out one of his power sprints and taking it to the line. The Liberty riders or Mambos dominating the local Master's fields. On our Monday ride one of the guys lost his bottom bracket. No problem. Caleb road the last 7 or 8 miles one handed, pushing his team mate back with a little help from Mike Firth....at 21 mph. Tough guy.

But the toughest local rider? We had some major concerns about one of my favorites, Betty ( if you need to ask her last name...well, you're on the wrong blog) who got crashed out by a car at Phillipsburg and ended up getting air lifted to the hospital. I was trying to find out where she was, hoping she was okay.

Well, I finally found her. She was at Basking Ridge ( two days later) nailing 11th out of 20 in the Men's 55+ event.

Which is why we love her.

Tough as nails.

(Quick footnote, found out today Betty was mistakenly placed, she wasn't at Basking Ridge. Still healing up from her encounter with a car at P'burg. Which doesn't change my opinion even a little bit. Toughest women I know. Hope to see her back soon).

Well if you don't include:

Hittting the unadmitted 50 recently (racing younger still because YES i thought I should have been that vane...)

BTW > Big thanks to Gary S. for the beer and hospitality afterthe race, a real nice guy and great famly! Very nice to speak and spend some time with you! My treat next time as you are the consumate competitor and good guy.

Competed in one more TT just to save face from my last NJ series TT which was less than I wanted or expected.

Deep Blue TT in DE 11 miles flat with one roller out/back format

This is a MUST DO for anyone looking for a TT in Southern NJ or DE areas... EXCELLENT course/ promoter and overall incredibly WELL run! PERFECT TT Thanks to the promoter, GREAT WORK!

Perfect day as well on Sunday as the winds had calmed a bit.

My output was down but decent time of 25:34 and 310 Watts for 9th in the CAT3 field (as a comparison my time in the 45+ = 5th & 35+ = 4th place)

So a good end to the 2010 TT season and more to come as off season knee surgery will sideline me a bit and then back at it in late December or early January for rthe hopes of new goals and further progress...

Best

Just finished up a nice stretch of training. After the Cat 3 Crit last Sunday I rode hard on Tuesday night, did Greentree on Thursday. Then 45 miles of hard riding at Pro Pedals on Saturday. Sunday was 58 miles at 19.0, 40 miles with the Paramount gang. Then another 55 miles today with Pro Pedals at our normal "Holiday" pace.
I feel like I'm finally starting to get into shape....now that the season's over. I've got one more race then I'll take a week off then start the off season. For me that means lots of long, easy rides through October, November, and December.

I just read a pretty good article that Mark Curran sent me about training intensities in endurance athletes. The gist of it was that the elite class athletes studied had their best performances when they did a high percentage
(80% - 85%) of their training at relatively low intensity (zone 1 and 2). The brutal intervals were still used....but sparingly. And I'm tending to lean back in that direction. One thing for sure, a steady diet of nothing but hard intervals several times a week all year long is a sure recipe for burn out; either physically, mentally, or both. I guess the secret is to find the right combination. I'm also suspicious that a true zone 2 work-out may be harder than most people think it is. Doing an honest 200w for two hours requires a fair amount of focus and discipline. It's not easy.

So that will be THE BIG PLAN this season. Go back to basics and do the old traditional base mileage thing. Hopefully the weather will co-operate so I'm not doing two hour rides on the trainer all winter.

And start looking forward to Branchbrook!

Well I just returned from my first real test of pain. Tonight I decided I would take out the powercranks and do 90 minutes of hilly tempo. I ended up coming home in the gutter. Tonight I realized that riding these cranks are like almost always going uphill. When you hit a 5 minute climb it is just harder. After about the eighth climb of the ride I actually had to do a little coasting. I am not too much of man to say that I got my rear end kicked and was questioning if I was going to make it home. It reminded me of almost 20 years ago when I got my first road bike to train for mountain biking. How far do I dare go, how many hills will I be able to tackle. These were all the same questions I once remember asking myself years ago. Anyways that’s about all the energy I have for commenting on these cranks tonight. I think I can now lift my leg up enough to take my socks off and may not have to use my arms to lift my legs up and over the bath tub.

Hey all,

I was a little nervous for this event. It's one I've had circled on my calendar since last season when I got 2nd. But, I haven't been riding much...at all really, since August 9th I had logged a grand total of 0hours and 0 minutes of bike time. that being said, I did know that all the work I had done through the winter months, and leading up to August, would be enough to get me through 40 miles. I just knew I would not be able to afford being very aggressive.

I sat back, and let the race unfold for the first 15-20 laps. I kept a close watch on the three-man break up the road, but was confident that it would not stick. 30 laps is a long way to go on a fast course like Marlton, and all it takes is for one guy to short-pull, or start looking around, and the breaks come back really quick.

My team was very strong also, keeping me sheltered and protecting me best they could for as long as they could. I never could ask for more than that. Their job was to get me to the end...my job is to finish it off.

This season has been a crazy whirlwind of emotions....both positive and negative. Riding around on a bike which is dedicated to my daughter's memory is not something I take lightly. And all those emotions hit me during this race, especially the finish. I knew I didn't have enough to go up the road solo...but I did know that I owed it to my little girl to give one last, all out kick for the year. Worked out pretty well.

Thanks again to everyone for the support. the cycling community has been incredible.

The team had been looking forward to this race for several weeks now; I know I was. It was at Marlton, my absolute favorite course. And we have a pretty deep Cat 3 team. And we were leading the Cat 3 Cup coming into this, the last race in the series. The Cat 3 Team Cup was basically ours to win.

As long as we didn't screw it up. Which we're quite capable of doing.

It sound pretty easy. Just get at least three guys into the top twenty and pick up your team points. Done deal. But bike races are unpredictable, bad stuff can happen. Like last month when half our team was taken out in a last lap crash when an NYC rider pushed Otto (physically, with his hand) and took out 8 or 10 guys and pretty much took Chris Fritz totally out of contention for a shot at the Cat 3 leader's jersey. Not to take anything away from Neal Stoekle, he was on track to win it anyway (which he did, deservedly so). But stuff happens.

Today we had about twelve riders on the line. We really needed to put the nail in the coffin of Cycles 54; they were in second place in the team standings with Gaurdian in third. Peddler Shop looked to be a good ally, they're strong, we all know each other, and they were not in contention for the series overall. That turned out to work well for us at the end.

It was not a huge field, about 50 starters. Plan was to be aggressive. Try and attack early and often. We had enough riders where it would have been inexcusable to let a break go with-out one of us. Mark went from the gun and was 100m away before I got clipped in. We did a pretty good job of attacking and covering anything that went. Cycles 54, in particular Dave Hussey, seemed like they were always sitting right on the front. I got the feeling they were waiting for the right move. Peddler Shop seemed a little more patient, they've been around a little longer than our young Cat 3's. I figured they would make a move after the half way point.

Around 15 laps in (of 27) I found myself at the front (imagine that) on the hill and decided to do a "look at me mom" attack. That's when you attack 200 - 300m from the start finish and come through off the front so everybody (all three bike racing fans) can see you and marvel at your racing prowess. I did that once at Branchbrook in a 1/2/3 race and Mark (on the side lines watching) almost swallowed his tongue. Needless to say the pack pretty much let me go....wasn't much doubt I was comin' back real quick. I'll add that to my palmares' , "off the front at Marlton Cat 3 race for 500m".

The pack was starting to tire; you could feel it. We had a coupla hard laps, but nothing too brutal. With about five to go Mike Firth got away. Mike's won 4 out of 5 (and took second) of the "Eddy" TT's he's entered this season. He can motor. As luck would have it I found a seam and had inexplicably found my way to the front (I'll try not to let that happen again) right about the time Chris Foster (Peddlers Shop) slipped away to try and bridge up to Mike. Chris is a real beast, he was quite capable of staying away. Now I found myself sitting on the front next to Pete Wilson (an old friend, Peddler Shop). We each have a rider away, pretty clear what we need to do. We have, between the two of us, 15 - 20 guys who aren't going to chase. This is where Cycles 54 mis-read it. Maybe they thought it was all together. They had the most to lose with no one up the road. Regardless, me and Pete just sat there rollin' along at a pretty pedestrian 22 - 23 mph; waiting for the surge.

But it never came. So we kept riding,I think we sat there for a full lap before the field got antsy and ramped things up. But it was too late. We each had a rider way up the road and they were goin' 1-2. So for us, we're set. Worst case second place team points. Maybe the win. We still had our sprinter John King available to grab another top ten spot for cup points.

And that's pretty much how it played out. Mike ended up getting a jump on Chris for the win. There was another rider in between the break and the field for third. John King nailed the field sprint for 4th. And Caleb
rounded out the top ten to pretty much secure the much-needed team points.

So for us, a very good result. It played to our favor having Peddler Shop send a guy across to work with Mike . When there are two well represented teams with riders away; you have about a 1/3 of the peloton that isn't going to chase. The fact that Peddler Shop couldn't hurt us in the Cup Series was a bonus. Things don't often go as planned in bike races but when they do it's a beautiful thing. And we've certainly managed to butcher enough races to know the difference.

Gaurdian was back in third place; they managed to put LJ and Neal into 8th and 11th. Nice job by Neal locking up the Cat 3 individual leaders jersey this season. They just didn't have enough horsepower with only two guys to match up with us lining up twelve guys. It's just a matter of pure numbers.

As for me, I died on the last lap and ended up 39th....but it really didn't matter. I made the right move at the right time and did my part to help Mike stay away for the win. Other than winning, I don't think there's anything more satisfying than being part of ( even if it's a small part) a winning effort.

It feels good.

My goal was to get data before base training. I lined up and off I went with the big dogs at 5:30 min/mile pace. I decided to see how long I could hold it without blowing up. I got to 3/4 of the first mile and then had to dial it back to 6:30 pace. Then held it to approx. the 2 mile mark when Ati Bekes (I think you all know him) passed me looking real smooth and locked into his pace. I kept motoring along and noticed my pace was high 6's low 7's. WTF>>>>>>

Kept motoring and couple people passed me......I passed a couple of people. Good stuff. Finished with good numbers to go into base training. End time was 21:07. Slow as you know what due to the first mile. So I have work to do. Time to hit the hills, strength training, and bricks. Good stuff. Spent time touching base with Fritz (thanx again for a great job/race) and speaking with Ati Bekes.....good man. Just good morning. Came back and played Barbie's with my daughter, now off to meet the family at the beach.

Adios,

The big part of the season is almost here. Up to this point, I have been busy with some key races that I needed as prep for my main goals of the season: national championships and world cups. Racing itself has been good. I won a few races here, then I raced a pro 6 day in Italy and got some good results and then won some state titles afterward.

Really, though, all of the racing that I have been doing has been to prepare me for what's to come. I have sacrificed a ton of local results, especially on the road, to be good for when I need to be. People don't ever get this but if you're goal is to be good at the world level, you sort of have to sacrifice the local level. Every week, there are guys who are peaked and ready to go. I am buried with lots of extra training and miles that aren't necessary to be your best for a 90 minute crit. In fact, they hurt you in races like that. I usually have plenty of extra miles on race days and I have blocks where I am really tired. But I also have my year on a very different schedule. Everyone here plans to race from May to the first weekend of September. Well, I have to be at my best from October to March for track season but be good enough to train through the hard crits of the summer. Also, what you need to have in your legs to be good against the best guys in the world are different than what it takes to always be top 5 in the local crits. It's a really different world.

Anyway, hopefully the next time I check in I'll have some good news about my main goals of the year. Wish me luck.

The situation where a break laps the field in a crit happens every so often but it seems like no one really knows what the rules are. I have been in moves which lap a field and the field is instructed to let us go by. I've also been in breaks which lap the field and just are re-absorbed and forced to sprint it out with the pack. Even more strange, I've been at the start line and heard USA Cycling officials instruct the riders, if you get lapped, you are pulled from the race. Yesterday there was a 10 man break which I was a part of that lapped the field in the Marlton 1/2/3 race. Upon catching them, I was thinking, OK-I'm 1.1 miles ahead of everyone here, the peloton has now had a lap removed from their total mileage, they're all fresh after slowing down when they realized we were gone, and I'm totally fried from doing 30mph in a small group for the last 20 miles ; now I'm catching elbows and fighting for position in a 60 rider field sprint?? Any thoughts? I got into a break away so I wouldn't have to be part of a dangerous field sprint!

It's no secret that I love Marlton, and with back-to-back races today and next week.....well, I've really been looking forward to it. The fields weren't quite as large as usual, probably due to the sketchy weather. We got some rain, but it wasn't too bad. Some heavy showers; but nothing that lasted. In the 1/2/3 race we had Eric Wallenberg away in a ten man break that eventually lapped the field,he finished around 9th or 10th. Not to be out done, his son Tim pulled a nice 5th out of approx 30- 40 Cat 5's. He's following in his father's foot steps. Also in Cat 5 there's a kid from Quaker City Wheelmen/ Break Away who got second. Which isn't too remarkable, until ya see him. His name's Josh Case, he's fourteen and fairly small. He looks like a little kid on the bike. I saw him at Greentree on Thursday night and my first thought is "This kid's gonna get killed". But he rode mid-pack the whole night and handled himself like a seasoned rider, very smooth; signaling when he was making a move. He's obviously well-coached. And he's a very nice, polite kid. Keep an eye on that name.

Which is just great. Now I've got 70 year old Joe Saling, a coupla 14 and 15 year olds, and Betty and Beth beatin' up on me. At least Saling is the only one I have to ride against head-to-head. But I'm having a hard time keeping the embarrassment quotient to a minimum as I get hammered by old men, women (young and old) and a coupla eight graders.

In Cat 3 a two man break stayed away, we managed 5th (John King) and 8th (Otto Sanchez). Not too remarkable a day.

The 45+ started out on the wrong foot as Mark managed to get taken down in the parking lot by somebody warming up riding the wrong way. He made it too the line. Looked to be around fifty starters. Dave Hudson and Richie Ross were elsewhere; I figured that was two places I'd pick up. We had Dirty Dave Beaudry, Mark, Frank DiCola, Eddie Marciano, Big Jim, and Mike Smith. Mark and Mike were probably the strongest (of our group). Dave was our best chance in the sprint and I planned on getting him to the front on the last lap. Didn't think I was fast enough for a true lead out, but I was hoping to at least take some air and give him a clean ride to the front.

But you know how racing goes. The plans go out the window and get replaced with chaos. Add in some wet roads and ya got a mess on your hands. We were doin' 25 laps, somewhere around the 10th lap or so somebody slid out in the first turn and took out Dave and Mark along with a coupla Peddler Shop guys. About 15 - 20 guys were off the front and the rest of us were pickin' our way through trying to get back on. There was one brutal lap until things came together and the pace started to settle down. Several guys in the crash took a free lap and got back in, Dave was out for good. That kinda changed things I knew Mark and Mike would try and get away. Mike in particular made several attacks off the front. With about five laps to go he got a huge gap, Mark was sitting on the front trying to give him some space. But it didn't hold up. Mike came back and somewhere in there three guys got away including Steve Cochran (Mambo's). I was our last chance for any sort of result (not really the ideal situation for our team). I knew Mark was cooked and I assumed he was a little frayed around the edges from the two crashes. Mike Smith generally doesn't want any part of the final sprint. With two to go I was in a solid position and with one to go I was floating around the top ten with a coupla guys still away. Karl Moore from Hearthouse came by and I grabbed his wheel. Things got a little spooky coming into the last corner as Sherb Naulty (Liberty) got his rear derailluer ripped off of his new Colnago (yikes!). I got a little antsy and hit the last turn way too slow and sprinted to the line for 15th. I'm thinkin' I had a shot at a top ten....but you know how that goes. Everybody else was thinkin' the same thing "If the roads were dry I woulda.......".

Cochrane got the win with Lee Mestres stickin' third. Mark rolled in behind me for 17th with the rest of the team in the pack. Dave wasn't hurt, he rolled a tubular but otherwise no major problems. I was signed up for the 3/4 but decided to take a pass. Didn't want to push my luck in the rain. And I was beat.

And I beat Joe Saling. Now I just gotta find a way to beat those damn kids.

And women.

I have recently swapped some parts around on my Tarmac so I have 2 pieces for sale:

1) Specialized Toupe Team Saddle, with solid titanium rails, 143 width. This is a 2010 model, white saddle with red and black markings. It has about 300 miles on it and is in near new condition. It's super comfy. It has a real weight of 180 grams on my scale. I am asking $140 shipped in the US.

2) Ritchey WCS Carbon 2 bolt Seatpost, 27.2mm diameter, 350mm length. This post post is in excellent shape and has been used for approximately 550 miles. It only has some slight marking from being clamped in the bike but is still in excellent shape. It has a real weight of 181 grams. I am asking $115 shipped in the US.

I am willing to listen to offers on the above. Payment would be through Paypal unless you are local, then of course you can pay in cash. I will ship via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation. PM or email me with any questions. Thanks.

Well I had a great start to the season.......but a horrific ending. I met some good people and had a kick tail time with the series. I have come to the conclusion (which I'm sure most of those reading have as well) that I'm much better at DUATHLON than TT'ing. In 2009 I was ranked within the top 50 in the NATION in my age group (35-39). In TT'ing I have no desire to know. Along with some good shows, I had some absolutely horrific, embarrassed to be on a bike shows. Plus, my office has been a little neglected (which is the 1st priority). So......

The furniture sale came next. And then........another furniture sale. And then.......sold some more stuff. And now.....

I only have my winter, kick around, cracked chainstay rig for beating my legs up. And the running kicks of course.

I have been running for the past 5-6weeks and the mileage has gone up and the pace gone down. Good Stuff. I start functional training (plyometrics, circuits, core, and stability stuff) next week along with continued base training on the bike and the run. :D

NEXT SEASON, I am going back to playing with the big dogs at the national and regional level for DU's and WILL be back in the TT series events that fit. The TT series really is put together spot on and I AGREE BIG TIME that the series is organized MUCH better than some national events.

NEXT SEASON I am also making some changes that some of you on PE know about and some of you don't. I mean no disrespect and/or ill will, I just need a change. That being said, I've really enjoyed my season even though it was not as successful as previous ones depending on your perspective.

I MUST PERSONALLY THANK the TT organizers, race promotors associated with the series, and Tom M...the guy must work hard at a second job that he doesn't get paid for......So THANK YOU. I will be back next year and hope to see you all at the races and/or on the road.

How lucky are we to reside in the greatest cycling state in the country? SO many races, all well run. Only bad thing about our race scene is that because of how disgusting our traffic congestion is, there are very few road races. What we DO have lots of are Time Trials, all run as well or BETTER than Nationals.

I haven't been around long enough to know first-hand, but I've been told that only a few years back, the TT Cup consisted of only 7 or 8 events. Then it went to 10 with 1 drop, then 11 with 2 drops. My prediction is that 2011's schedule will be 12-14. It's hard to say no to reputable race directors. I'm not a fan of driving to Tuxedo Park NY or High Point, and those who live up there do not want to drive to Cape May or Hammonton or LBI. The TT Cup committee will ask for feedback on this issue as well as others...but really, I'm grateful to have so many events to choose from. Sure, the TT Cup can't have EVERY Time Trial included. I personally would like to see the series have closer to 6, though I doubt I will ever see that. I feel it would give TT Cup events more of a coveted, exclusive feel. 1 40k, 2 circuits, 1 prologue'ish short event, 1 20k, 1 hill climb ...but that's just me dreaming ;)

So yes, the series is long. But if you play your cards right you don't have to do all of them to contend. 11 races, 2 drops? Do 9! Skip the 2 you don't want to drive to! I actually missed 4 events and won, but 35+ wasn't contested as hotly as other fields. Kenny Gilliland made a strong showing and made 8 events for 2nd overall, and Pohndorf came out to5 events and kicked enough a$$ for 3rd overall. Strangely, Mark and I only competed against each other 2x - Readington, where I won, and States, where we both won because I did 35+ and he did 40+...and beat me (and everyone else for that matter!!!). The other 3 TTs that Mark did were events I missed, and he won them. Had we gone head to head every event, it would have been MUCH uglier for me!! Heck, Friefelder could've opted for M35+, but why "what if"?! I'm taking the cup and running, baby!!!

I have such a tremendous amount of respect and awe for the guys that made all of the events! These TTs are so frikkin stressful, mentally and physically, that doing the seven I did was more than enough for me. Granted, many of these die hard TT Cup folk don't do crits or road races, but some do. Some do every frikkin GS Cup race AND TT Cup race. Impressive. Even when my kids are older, I couldn't imagine racing that much!

Kudos to the die hards!

here's the saturday heights brookdale garret loop. i like it and some one nycc commented he likes the looks of it, my neigbor who recently did the 100 mile ramapo rally loop feels there 's too much auto traffic in my loop, anyways i met a roadie on garret mtn and he helpe me get back east of the passaic via ackerman/outwater (better than glassy crooks ave bridge)
put a new headset on the old trek. the roadie i met on saturday had the discovery channel edition. i think i like the post office edition color schema more, but that giant cross bike looked pretty cool, if i had my druthers, i'd swap out my giant yukon fx for an anthem, but i think i basicly have the bikes i need for now. (still have the tcr advanced i picked uo here on p.e. been riding it a lot this summer)
here's the saturday heights brookdale garret loop. i like it and some one nycc commented he likes the looks of it, my neigbor who recently did the 100 mile ramapo rally loop feels there 's too much auto traffic in my loop, anyways i met a roadie on garret mtn and he helpe me get back east of the passaic via ackerman/outwater (better than glassy brooks ave bridge)
put a new headset on the old trek. the roadie ie met on saturday had the discovery channel edition. i think i like the post office edition color schema more, but that giant cross bike looked pretty cool, if i had my druthers, i'd swap out my giant yukon fx for an anthem, but i think i basicly have the bikes i need for now. (still have the tcr advanced i picked uo here on p.e. been riding it a lot this summer)

thank you!

Last I wrote was post-Upper Freehold. Since then, my work status has returned to normal, so that's been great for my family and my training. August 1st I was reassigned to Community Policing, and it's had a great impact on my state of mind, my training has been far more consistent on an 8 hour work day, and my family see more of me. All good. Between work, gigs and cycling, I've actually managed to have an awesome summer with my wife and daughters. Lots of great weather has allowed us to do some fun beach trips, they've come to a lot of my LBI afternoon gigs, and some other fun stuff thrown in to make it a memorable summer. Music has been CRAZY busy. 6 gigs a week some weeks, often double gig days - playing 3pm-7pm at one place, packing up and playing 9-12 or 10-1 someplace else. Insane! I'm very fortunate to be getting so much work in an area that is FLOODED with music talent (LBI area).

While I'm on the music kick, I have to brag about a new friendship that I made this summer. Anyone heard of a little metal band called MEGADETH? If not, look 'em up. I met and became friends with David Ellefson, founding member and bass player. Small world - turns out his wife is from the area, graduated high school with a few very good friends of mine, and they have a home here that they visit often. The friendship already got me killer tix to the World Carnage Tour last Sunday featuring Thrash Metal legends Testament, Megadeth and Slayer - all bands I LOVE. Funny thing is as much as I primarily listen to metal, my band and I play NONE! I play stuff like the Eagles, Matchbox 20, Fuel, U2, Tom Petty, Sublime...then get in my truck and blast Slayer 'til my ears ring!!!

Ok, enough about the music. What about cycling since Upper Freehold...? Well, I missed 2 of the four closing TTs of the cup since then (Flanders and Long Meadow), but raced Kingwood and Blueberry, winning M35+ in each event and placing 6th overall at Kingwood and 3rd overall at Blueberry, where I did my fastest TT of the year. I did 3 of the Lakewood Twilight races, with my best finish there being 3rd last week from a 4 man break...raced at the Circuito de Evesham Cat 3 Cup crit where I got caught up behind a last lap crash, clipped back in, and suffered a tremendous hamstring cramp when I went to sprint away (ouch...it was only close to 100 degrees!!!)...the Ronde 123 RR where I survived for a pack finish...the State TTT where my team got silver in M35+...then wrapped up the TT Cup. I am happy to say that I won the TT Cup M35+. It was a HUGE goal of mine since 2008, and circumstances this season went my way.

So, Marlton the next 2 weekends and my season is done. No September races because my daughters' Cross Country season starts September 12th. I will ride through September, then on the 28th I get the "V" procedure followed by a 14 day rest from the bike. Nothing but base, base, base for a few months to start off my 2010/2011 season. I made the mistake of starting the harder stuff a tad early this season and paid dearly come mid May. Of course I was on a crappy schedule and was never able to build the FTP back up...lesson learned.

Ok, enough about me...before I close this entry (cuz God only knows when the next one will be :D ), I want to say Congrats to all the State Champions so far, all of the TT Cup Champions, and wish everyone the best of luck on the 29th at State Crits. See you there!
